The spur-like radio feature in Centaurus
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a study of the radio emission of the Centaurus region at galactic latitudes 2◦ ≤ b ≤ 18◦, using preexisting 408 MHz continuum data and results of new 1.42 GHz continuum and neutral hydrogen line observations. It is shown that the extensive spur-like radio feature visible in this region has a non-thermal nature and is actually formed by several previously unidentified individual sources. Five new supernova remnant (SNR) candidates have been detected at relatively high latitudes. Three of them, as well as two former candidates reported by Duncan et al. (1995), were confirmed through the computation of their spectral indices. One of the new SNRs, G315.4+12.9, might be associated with the open cluster NGC 5460.

The extended H α emitting filaments surrounding NGC 4696 , the central galaxy of the Centaurus cluster
We present images of NGC 4696, the central galaxy in the Centaurus cluster, showing the large extent of cool filaments which are bright in Hα line emission. These filaments share the detailed structure of both the central dust lane and the inner regions of the arc-like plumes seen in soft X-ray emission. The X-ray gas is at its coolest, and most absorbed in this same region. The smoothness of t...
متن کاملThe low-power nucleus of PKS 1246−410 in the Centaurus Cluster
We present Chandra, Very Large Array (VLA), and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the nucleus of NGC 4696, a giant elliptical in the Centaurus cluster of galaxies. Like M87 in the Virgo cluster, PKS1246−410 in the Centaurus cluster is a nearby example of a radio galaxy in a dense cluster environment. In analyzing the new X-ray data we have found a compact X-ray feature coincident ...
متن کاملBepposax Observations of Centaurus a : the Hard Continuum and the Iron Line Feature
The radio galaxy Centaurus A was observed by the BeppoSAX satellite five times from 1997 to 2000. From July 6 1999 to August 17 1999, the source was also simultaneously pointed by COMPTEL on-board of the γ− ray satellite CGRO. Centaurus A has a complex spectrum with multiple extended components and a strongly absorbed (NH ∼ 10 23 cm) nucleus well fitted by a power law (Γ ∼ 1.8) which bends at h...
متن کاملSpatially - resolved X - ray spectroscopy of the core of the Centaurus cluster
We present Chandra data from a 31.7 ks observation of the Centaurus cluster, using the ACIS-S detector. Images of the X-ray emission show a plume-like feature at the centre of the cluster , of extent 60 arcsec (20 kpc in projection). The feature has the same metallicity as gas at a similar radius, but is cooler. Using adaptive binning, we generate temperature, abundance and absorption maps of t...
متن کاملSpitzer Observations of Centaurus A: Synchrotron Emission in the Infrared
We present measurements obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in five bands from 3.6–24μm of the northern inner radio lobe of Centaurus A, the nearest powerful radio galaxy. We show that this emission is synchrotron in origin. Comparison with ultraviolet observations from GALEX shows that diffuse ultraviolet emission exists in a smaller region than the infrared but also coinciding with the ...
